Maccabi Tel Aviv's Lior Eliyahu Traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves
Could another Israeli born player be NBA bound?
Lior EliyahuMaccabi Tel Aviv Forward Lior Eliyahu is close to joining his country mate, Omri Casspi in the National Basketball Association, as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Eliyahu, who selected 44th overall by the Orlando Magin in 2006, was traded almost immediately to the Houston Rockets. On Tuesday, Eliyahu's rights were traded to the Timberwolves as part of a trade involving Chase Budinger going to the Timberwolves in exchange for the 18th pick in Thursday's NBA draft.
The 26-year-old is now expected to participate in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas where he will have an opportunity to showcase his skills and hopefully become the second Israeli born player in the NBA after Casspi.
Although Eliyahu has three years remaining on his Maccabi contract, he does have an NBA buyout clause and can leave for $500,00 this summer. There is a possibility that the Timberwolves could contribute to Eliyahu's buyout, but it's not expected.
The 6-foot-10, 232-pound Eliyahu averaged 11.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game this season for Maccabi.
