Jewish-Italian Camilia Giorgi the Talk of Wimbledon’s First Week
Despite loss to Spain in EuroCup final, news not all bad for Italian sports fans
Camilia GiorgiDespite today’s loss at Wimbledon, and the 4-0 thrashing by Spain over the Italians at the European Soccer Championship, there is some good news in Italian sports circles today.
The talk during the first week of the legendary tennis tournament was all about 20-year-old Jewish-Italian-Camilia Giorgi, who was the biggest surprise of the tourney, having defeated Russia’s Flavia Pennetta, the 20th seed and 16th seed, and fellow Italian, Nadia Petrova, on her way to round four.
Ranked 145th in the world coming into play at the All England Club, Giorgi finally came back to reality today (July 2) when she was defeated in straight sets – 6-2 and 6-3 - by the tourney’s third-seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.
Had Giorgi been able to upset the Pole, she would have made it to the quarter final round, not an easy task. Meanwhile, to get to this position, Giorgi won six straight matches to reach the round of 16 which is still quite impressive, especially for such a young player.
According to reports from the Jewish Chronicle, the Israeli Tennis Federation may be in negotiations with the father of the young phenom, Sergio, to convince her to make aliyah, and use her tennis talents while representing the Jewish state, in return for a share of any money she wins in competition over the next several years.
