Orthodox Jewish Woman Running for N.Y. State Senate

22-year-old Republican/Conservative candidate’s website is a definite eye-catcher

Mindy Meyer is certainly unlike any other New York State Senate candidate before her.

The 22-year-old is running in the 21st district of Brooklyn on both the Republican and Conservative party tickets, making her both the first Orthodox Jewish woman and the “first young woman” to do so, she says.

But despite her distinction from other candidates, Meyer is making no attempt to blend in with the seemingly more traditional brand of older, male politicians.

Her website, for starters, is bright, hot pink.

The tune of LMFAO’s “I’m Sexy and I know it” plays in the background, which is fitting considering Meyer’s tagline, “I’m senator and I know it” is written across the banner of the site.

Meyer also declares herself the “Diva of the District,” a label on the site written in leopard print text.

Inspired by Elle Woods, the main character of the 2001 film “Legally Blonde” played by Reese Witherspoon, Meyer told ABCNews that the goal of the website is to attract a “younger audience” and show them that politics can be “contemporary and exciting.”

And to spread her message, there’s no better way than by making use of her favourite colour.

“If Elle Woods could take pink to Harvard, why can't I bring it to the Senate?” Meyer told ABC. “If the only thing negative you can say about me is that my website is pink and it's not red, white and blue and it doesn't put you to sleep, then I think I'm alright. When I actually go out there and campaign, they will see that I'm serious and informed.”

On her website, Meyer vows to fight for school choice, crack down on crime, eliminate poverty and unemployment, and indicates a pro-life stance on abortion.

Dressed as the heroine from the Hunger Games in one of the photos, Meyer advocates for “no more ‘Hunger Games’ in our district.”

Meyer is running against 10-year Democratic incumbent Sen. Kevin Parker, who she feels has “wasted” everyone’s time during his decade in the Senate.

“I am looking forward to accomplishing for the 21st District that which the incumbent has not done for over ten years,” she states on her website. “I am excited by the prospect of employing new programs in our district to make a real difference in the lives of the people who matter most, the individuals of our community.”

Meyer says she isn’t going to let her lack of political experience hold her back.

“I can tell you one thing, I have no experience in corruption,” said Meyer. “This is how politics has to change. There is always corruption, but I have the intention to follow my values and ensure that none of what happens in my district is corrupt.”
