Jared Loughner, the shooter responsible for killing 6 people and injuring 13, including Arizona rep. Gabrielle Giffords, pleaded guilty on Tuesday.

The shooting took place on January 8, 2011 in Tucson, Arizona. Loughner opened fire at a constituents meeting Rep. Giffords was holding outside a Safeway in the parking lot.

Loughner previously had a not guilty plea submitted on his behalf in lieu of schizophrenia, but the court ruled today that the shooter was competent enough to understand his actions, and that his illness was under control.

Loughner was initially charged with 49 criminal counts including first-degree murder, and was potentially facing the death penalty. After pleading guilty to 19 of his charges, the death penalty is off the table… but he will face seven consecutive life sentences, plus an additional 140 years.

Before the final sentence hearing, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords released a public statement saying “The pain and loss caused by the events of Jan. 8, 2011 are incalculable… Avoiding a trial will allow us- and we hope the whole Southern Arizona community- to continue with our recovery.”
