Killer of Leiby Kletzky Pleads Guilty to Murder and Kidnapping

Levi AronAfter being told by New York State Supreme Court Justice Neil Firetog that using a defense of not guilty by reason of mental defect was not a viable option, Levi Aron, the 36-year-old Brooklyn man accused of killing 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky last summer, has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and kidnapping charges.
On July 11, 2011, a month before his birthday, eight-year-old Leiby was allowed for the first time to walk partway home alone from his day camp when he stopped to ask Aron for directions before getting into his car. After two days of exhaustive searches, pasts of the boy’s dismembered body was found in a freezer in Aron’s apartment.
Aron, who had originally pleaded not guilty, arrived in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, a yarmulke and a full beard, could face up to as many as 40 years in prison.
Aron is to be formally sentenced on Aug. 29.
“Today we close the door on this one aspect of our tragedy and seek to remember only the gifts that God has bestowed,” Brooklyn state Assemblyman Dov Hikind said Thursday, “including the nine years Leiby was with us.”
