Amir Weintraub Secures Israel a Spot in Tennis World Group
After two-year absence, Israel returning to Davis Cup action following Rosh Hashanah miracle
And, when it was all said and done, Weintraub, ranked just 224rd in the world, who was also suffering a bad cramp, downed Go Soeda in four sets on Sunday night, giving Israel a 3-2 playoff win over Japan in Tokyo and, in the process, cemented Israel’s return to Davis Cup action after two years of going without.
The playoff victory was an especially timely one as Israel, which lost 4-1 to Chile in March 2010 and dropped out of the World Group, had failed twice to regain its place among the world's top 16 nations, losing to Austria in 2011 and to Canada last year.
"Last year I beat Raonic of Canada in the Davis Cup on my birthday and this year I helped the team to the World Group, hopefully next year I can celebrate with a win in the semifinals," said an understandably proud and excited Weintraub who also happened to seal the victory on his 26th birthday. "We may not deserve to be in the World Group when you consider our rankings, but we deserve it because of our heart."
