New Jersey Conservative Day School Takes a Stand Against Homophobia

Golda Och Academy refuses to renew Boy Scouts charter

The Boy Scouts of America have placed a ban on homosexual leaders

West Orange, New Jersey’s Golda Och Academy, a Conservative Jewish day school, is sending a strong message to The Boy Scouts of America, and that message is simple: We will not tolerate the exclusion of gays as leaders.

The school has no plans to renew its Boy Scouts charter because of the organization's policy that excludes gay and lesbian leaders. The Boy Scouts reaffirmed if ban on homosexuals this summer.

“To exclude same-sex families from membership and adult volunteerism is in direct contradiction of school policies, which place high value on inclusion,” read a letter sent to the Boy Scouts that was signed by Joyce Raynor, Golda Och Academy’s Head of School.

In a letter sent to parents of its students, the school – which has a number of same-sex families - wrote that the view of the Scouts was a "problematic image for many families.”

In the last decade, the Reform movement has urged its congregations to withdraw their sponsorship of troops because of this situation.
